Costa Rica - Volcano

We set out today to get a little more acquainted with the volcano at La Fortuna. We decided to hike the volcano but as far as we could tell no one was allowed on the volcano itself. We found out today that the last eruption of the volcano was 2010. Not that long ago - most living people here probably think of the volcano as a killer mountain. So we hiked near it at Arenal 1968. The trail that we chose (the red one below) took us over acres and acres of pyroclastic flows.

This team was ready to go. 5.3 KM I run that much every other night. No problem we could do this in our sleep.

Things started easy enough - it is a jungle but so far no problem

This is what happens if you let your grass grow

Now we have a fair bit of climb and the beginnings of pyroclastic flow

This is some of the pyroclastic flows. Even where the trail was marked they were quite challenging to traverse.

We reached the overlook with some great views

Lots of ups and downs and finally out of the pyroclastic rocks - time for rest

Had to take this picture because the clouds moved from the top of the volcano. Again, only for a few minutes.

Coffee plants

We stopped at this restaurant at the end of the trail. The food was great, which is fortunate because no one and I mean no one is going to pass this place up after taking the long hike.

I figure you can't mess up fried chicken and fries. They were both great and served on a board and banana leaf - Bonus

Natural beauty everywhere you look. Now home to relax

When we got home I took time to swim with this girl. We swam and then moved up to the hot tub where we talked for a while about almost everything. Time well spent for both of us. I love you Emily Grace.
